Welcome
to Don Valley School & Performing Arts College Drama Department
The philosophy of the Drama Department is founded on the necessity of
preparing the minds of young people for entrance to the
world outside school as well as educating students about
and inspiring students to embrace theatre and its history.

Teaching
and learning about the theatre and the history of the theatre
is just as important in the department, with much work based
around plays, playwrights, directors and theatrical techniques.
In Year 7, students are taught in their form group where they can learn to express themselves in a safe environment. They have two lessons per week.
During Years 8 and 9 students will continue to work on issue, texts and skills, developing and refining their experience.
At the end of Key Stage Three, students
are expected to produce a piece of synoptic theatre that
will show their progress on the course. Year 9 students
also participate in an Arts Day performance in front of
their peers.
The Edexcel Drama syllabus is introduced at Key Stage Four. This was chosen because of its close relation to the aims of the Department. Students continue to explore text, issues and skills. Each half term they are given a particular theme to relate to and explore. Examples include Gender, Social Expectation and Identity. Year 12 and 13 progress to Edexcel Drama and Theatre Studies. The students are encouraged to explore a variety of issues that will challenge their understanding of life in the outside world. Particular emphasis is given to the study of theatre in the last three decades with a focus on the social and cultural problems visible in today's world. Playwrights studied include Harold Pinter, Ayub Khan–Din and Olwen Wymark.

The latest school production in co-operation with the Music Department was
‘Dracula Spectacula'. It was a fast moving and energetic
production. You can see photographs from this production
on this web page. Year 12 and Year 13 recently performed
Shakespeare's ‘Macbeth', Jane Thornton's ‘Shakers' and Christopher
Marlowe's ‘Dr Faustus' at their performance evenings. We
are now rehearsing ‘Sleeping Beauty' as the school production
and Year 13 have created their own devised pieces to perform
in December.

All in all an exciting year for the Drama Department and with some exciting developments in the pipeline we are sure that 2005/2006 will be even better!
Julie Cooper (Head of Department)
