Music Curriculum

At KS3 students develop their performing, composing and listening skills through studying the following topics

Year 7

  • Rhythm
  • Staff Notation
  • Instruments of the Orchestra
  • Music of the 1960s
  • Graphic Notation
  • Garage Band (Music Technology)

Year 8

  • Chords and Reggae
  • The Voice
  • Programme Music
  • Chromaticism
  • Music of the 1970s
  • Rhythm
  • Garage Band

Year 9

  • 12 Bar Blues
  • Cross-curricular topic that culminates in performances of Music & Drama
  • Pop project
  • Latin American Music
  • Dance Music
  • Film Music
  • Music in Advertising

Pupils can then go on and study Music at GCSE and A Level.

Resources

Throughout the curriculum pupils have access to the following equipment:

  • Mac computers running Sibelius 4 (notation package) and Garage Band (software to aid performance/composition)
  • PCs running Sibelius 4 and Cubase (software to aid performance/composition)
  • Recording equipment including microphones, mixers and CD burning facilities
  • Each classroom also has keyboards, percussion, piano and drum kit

xtra-curricular is a strong aspect of the Music Department with the following bands and clubs happening throughout each week:

  • Junior Band
  • Stage Band,
  • Concert Band
  • Choir
  • Keyboard Club
  • Drum Club
  • Music Technology Club
  • Theory Club
  • G.C.S.E. Study Club

The following instrumental lessons are offered through peripatetic staff:

  • Keyboard/Piano
  • Singing
  • Guitar (classical, bass and electric)
  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Drums/Europium/Baritone

The Music and Drama Departments collaborated to perform ‘Dracula Spectacula' in February 2005 and held a very successful Christmas Festival in December 2005.

Forthcoming Events

We will be working with the English Touring Opera Company through a variety of workshops culminating in a performance on 11 th July 2006.

A group of students are going on a five-day tour to Belgium on 14 th July 2006.

The planned musical for February 2007 is ‘Chicago'.
