Personal and Social Education Information

February 8, 2011 in PSHCE by Mr Black

Part of our job in school is to help young people in our care to become independent, responsible and caring adults. All areas of school contribute to this aim, but in order to enhance the personal and social development of our students, we have developed a five-year Personal and Social Education (PSE) course in which all students will participate. Through concentrating on the person in PSE, we try to encourage our students in a positive understanding of them and to help them to become:

BETTER COMMUNICATORS: able to listen, to see other points of view and to put forward their own, clearly and appropriately in different situations.

BETTER DECISION MAKERS: able to make decisions sensibly, having weighed up available evidence.

BETTER PROBLEM SOLVERS: able to solve problems having looked at different possible answers and their consequences.

MORE INDEPENDENT: able to understand the world they live in; having the knowledge upon which to base decisions.

SOCIABLE: able to mix with others and understand social pressures; able to cope confidently and effectively with unfamiliar people or situations.

WHAT WE TEACH

The course throughout each year focuses on four main areas of development: Personal Management, Health and Safety, Personal Relationships and Social Awareness. Topics covered include drug education, money management, citizenship, industrial and economic understanding, careers, local government and world issues such as the environment. We look at problems of adolescence and changing relationships, and issues specifically concerned with sexual relationships are addressed in Years 9, 10 and 11.
