Geography is about the real world – how it affects you and how you affect it! We study Geography at a variety of scales: we use Doncaster and the local environment around us. We study issues happening in Europe and we go even wider exploring Asia, Africa, The Americas, Australasia and even Antarctica.
Geography at GCSE, explores the opinions and values of people. We look at lots of issues and attempt to understand why people and groups from different cultures have different ideas, values and attitudes.
The course consists of three units:
Unit 1 – Challenges of Living in a Built Environment
Unit 2 – People and the Natural World Interactions
Unit 3 – People, Work and Development
The GCSE course covers the following topics :
• Hydrology and the threat of flooding in the UK and world-wide
• Landforms – how they are formed and how human interaction is threatening them
• Fragile Environments – how any why they are being destroyed and how they are being managed in a sustainable way
• Exploding populations and the phenomenon of migrations : the impact of both on the rural and urban environment
• The world of work and trends in employment locally, nationally and globally
• Development – how is it measured and how do Geographers categorise countries into LEDCS, MEDCs and Developing countries.
75% of the GCSE is assessed at the end by two exams – one based on two of the units we have studied and also a decision-making Paper (based on the remaining unit).
25% of the GCSE is assessed by controlled assessment: this is an enquiry based on fieldwork (15%)and a geographical issued based on research (10%).
At the end of the course you will have a thorough knowledge of what is happening in the world. You will have an informed opinion of your own of the issues we study.
Geography is exciting because it is all happening just out there and the vast resources available in Geography bring the subject alive!
